groenland [Klimatfakta] - Klimatfakta.info

http://www.dmi.dk/en/groenland/maalinger/greenland-ice-sheet-surface-mass-budget/# As I reported last September, Greenland’s ice sheet mass balance had grown at close to record levels for the second year running. To clarify again, the mass balance calculation accounts for: 1) Snowfall. 2) Ice melt Daily (upper chart) and cumulative (lower) surface mass budget of the Greenland ice sheet, in billion tonnes per day, and billion tonnes, respectively. Blue lines show 2020-21 SMB year. The grey lines show the 1981-2010 average, and the red line in lower chart shows the record low SMB year of 2011-12 [DMI Polar Portal]. However, it is likely that the relatively high end of season SMB will mean a zero or close-to-zero total mass budget this year, as last year.

Factoring in these additional processes, we can calculate the total mass budget for the ice sheet for the year. For 2018-19, we estimate the ice sheet has seen a total net ice loss of around 329bn tonnes. The mass loss has been quantified by three independent techniques using changes in ice volume (6, 7), time-variable gravity , and input versus output fluxes or mass budget method (1, 2, 4, 9 ⇓ –11), for the time period 1992–2016 or 2002–2016. The mass budget method is the only one that provides information about the physical processes controlling the mass loss, i.e., the partitioning between surface mass balance (SMB) processes (accumulation minus runoff and other forms of ablation While the ice sheet was likely in balance (i.e., ice mass gain was balancing ice mass loss) during the 1970s, 1980s, and early 1990s (Mouginot et al. 2019), it began to lose mass in earnest beginning in the mid- to late 1990s. Marine-terminating glaciers are the outlets via which the Greenland ice sheet discharges ice mass to the ocean.

At DMI, we use a weather forecasting model to calculate how much Greenland ice is gained and lost every day. Totalled over the course of a year, from 1 September to 31 August, this gives us the Daily (upper chart) and cumulative (lower) surface mass budget of the Greenland ice sheet, in billion tonnes per day, and billion tonnes, respectively. Blue lines show 2018-19 SMB year; the grey lines show the 1981-2010 average; and the red line in lower chart shows the record low SMB year of 2011-12. Credit: DMI Polar Portal. The period 2003-2011 has seen ice sheet losses on Greenland averaging 234bn tonnes each year. The neutral mass change in the last two years does not – and cannot – begin to compensate for these losses. Almost all of the ice loss was due to changes in surface mass budget, with thinning found virtually everywhere. At some locations, the ice sheet surface decreased by over two and a half metres per year between 1995 and 2017 based on measurements using space-borne radar altimeters. Previous uses of the DMI graph includes 'Greenland Ice Growth Ahead Of Last Year’s Record Pace' (Oct 2017) which seems oddly careful to specify that DMI does show surface mass balance given that it goes on to talk of 'criminals in the press and academia'; 'Record Greenland Ice Growth Continues' (Sep 2017); 'Scientists Discover That Their strongly correlated with Greenland Blocking than with North Atlantic Oscilla-tion changes. In quantifying the association between Greenland coastal tem-peratures and Greenland Ice Sheet (GrIS) mass-balance changes, we show a stronger link of temperatures with total mass balance rather than surface mass balance. How the Greenland ice sheet fared in 2018 "surface mass budget" (SMB) of the ice sheet.
